AMS 3651

Although it is still frequently referenced in drawings and quote requests, AMS 3651 has been superseded by several other specifications, depending on the material type:

AMS 3652

Applies to non-critical grade skived sheet, film, and tape up to and including .125 inches thick. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE skived sheet and film meet the requirements of AMS 3652.

AMS 3656

Applies to extruded PTFE rods, tubes, and profiles. Requires radiographic inspection (x-rays) of all material supplied. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE extruded rod and fluteck™ P1000 extruded tube meet the requirements of AMS 3656.

AMS 3657

Applies to premium strength extruded PTFE rods, tubes, and profiles. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE extruded rod and fluteck™ P1000 extruded tube meet the requirements of AMS 3657.

AMS 3658

Applies to stress-relieved premium strength extruded virgin PTFE rods, tubes, and profiles. Requires radiographic inspection (x-rays) of all material supplied. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 stress-relieved virgin PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of AMS 3658. Stress-relieved tube is available upon request.

AMS 3659

Applies to stress-relieved premium strength extruded virgin PTFE rods, tubes, and profiles. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 stress-relieved virgin PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of AMS 3659. Stress-relieved tube is available upon request.

AMS 3660

Applies to molded virgin PTFE rods, tubes, and shapes. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE molded rod meet the requirements of AMS 3660. Molded tube is available on request.

Please note that this specification does not apply to:

  • Molded sheet
  • Rods and tubes over 12 inches in length
  • Rods under .750 inches in diameter
  • Tubes with a wall thickness of less than .500 inches

AMS 3662

Applies to virgin PTFE skived sheet, film, and tape up to and including .125 inches thick. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE skived sheet and film meet the requirements of AMS 3662.

AMS 3667

Applies to virgin PTFE molded sheet. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE molded sheet meet the requirements of AMS 3667.

AMS 3668

Applies to premium grade virgin PTFE molded rods, tubes, and shapes. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1500 premium grade virgin PTFE (download datasheet) molded rod and tube meet the requirements of AMS 3668.

AMS 3669

Applies to premium grade virgin PTFE molded sheet. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1500 premium grade virgin PTFE molded sheet meet the requirements of AMS 3668.

AMS 3678

Applies to 16 types of filled and unfilled PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes. This specification is unique in that it has detail specifications or "slash sheets" (for example, AMS 3678/1) for each of the 16 types of material. Summaries of the most commonly requested items are below.

AMS 3678/1

Applies to virgin PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes.

Grade A

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 stress-relieved virgin PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of AMS 3678/1 Grade A.

Grade B

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE molded rod (that has been stress-relieved after molding) meet the requirements of AMS 3678/1 Grade B.

AMS 3678/3

Applies to 15% glass 5% molybdenum disulfide PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes. Typical properties of fluteck™ P8000 GM 15% glass 5% molybdenum disulfide extruded and molded rods and tubes meet the requirements of AMS 3678/3.

AMS 3678/6

Applies to 60% bronzed-filled PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes. Typical properties of fluteck™ P4000 BZ 60% bronze-filled PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes meet the requirements of AMS 3678/6.

AMS 3678/10

Applies to 15% carbon-filled PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes.

AS Specifications

AS8791

Applies to virgin PTFE hydraulic and pneumatic retainers (back-up rings). Please note that this is a specification for finished parts, not raw materials. Requires virgin PTFE conforming to AMS 3678/1 Grade B.

Test method to determine tensile strength and elongation at break.

ASTM D792

Test method to determine specific gravity.

ASTM D882

Test method to determine tensile strength and elongation at break for films less than 1 mm (.039 in.) thick.

ASTM D1389

Test method to determine electrical flaws.

ASTM D1710

Applies to virgin and mechanical grade PTFE extruded rod, tube, and basic shapes.

Standard Extruded Rod and Tube

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE extruded rod and fluteck™ P1000 extruded tube meet the requirements of ASTM D1710 Type I (or Type II), Grade 1, Class A.

Stress-Relieved Extruded Rod and Tube

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 stress-relieved virgin PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of ASTM D1710 Type I (or Type II), Grade 1, Class B.

Radiographically Inspected Rod and Tube

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE extruded rod and fluteck™ P1000 extruded tube meet the requirements of AMS ASTM D1710 Type I (or Type II), Grade 1, Class C if the material has been radiographically inspected (x-rayed).

Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 stress-relieved virgin PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of ASTM D1710 Type I (or Type II), Grade 1, Class D if the material has been radiographically inspected (x-rayed).

Mechanical Grade (Reprocessed) Rod and Tube

Typical properties of fluteck™ P900 mechanical grade PTFE rods and tubes meet the requirements of ASTM D1710 Type III (or Type IV), Grade 2, Class A.

ASTM D3294

Applies to virgin and mechanical grade PTFE molded sheet and basic shapes. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE molded sheet and fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE molded rod meet the requirements of ASTM D3294 Type II, Grade 1, Class B.

ASTM D3295

Applies to paste-extruded rod (miniature beading) and tube (spaghetti tube) in coils. Vital Polymers does not carry any paste-extruded products.

ASTM D3308

Applies to virgin and mechanical grade PTFE film, skived tape, and skived sheets. Typical properties of fluteck™ P1000 virgin PTFE skived sheets and film meet the requirements of ASTM D3308 Type II, Grade 1.

ASTM D4745

Applies to a variety of filled PTFE moldings and extrusions.

15% Glass-Filled PTFE Extruded Rod

Typical properties of fluteck™ P8500 GL 15% glass-filled PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of ASTM D4745 Type II, Grade 1.

25% Glass-Filled PTFE Extruded Rod

Typical properties of fluteck™ P7500 GL 25% glass-filled PTFE extruded rod meet the requirements of ASTM D4745 Type II, Grade 2.

25% Glass-Filled PTFE Molded Rod and Molded Sheet

Typical properties of fluteck™ P7500 GL 25% glass-filled PTFE molded rod and fluteck™ P7500 GL 25% glass-filled PTFE molded sheet (.187 in. thick and above) meet the requirements of ASTM D4745 Type I, Grade 2.

ASTM D4894

Applies to PTFE resin. However, many of our items were produced from resin conforming to ASTM D4894.

Many Mil specifications in circulation (on drawings and RFQ requirements) have been superseded by other specifications.

L-P-403 C

L-P-403 was superseded by ASTM D1457, which was superseded in turn by ASTM D4894 and ASTM D4895.

MIL-P-1457

MIL-P-1457 has been superseded by ASTM D4894 and ASTM D4895.

MIL-P-14078

MIL-P-14078 was canceled and not replaced.

MIL-P-19468 A

MIL-P-19468 has been superseded by ASTM D1710 Type I, Grade 1, Class A.

MIL-P-22241

MIL-P-22241 has been superseded by ASTM D3308 (for skived sheet) and ASTM D3294 (for molded sheet).

MIL-P-22242

MIL-P-22242 was superseded by MIL-P-22241, which was superseded in turn by ASTM D3308 (for skived sheet) and ASTM D3294 (for molded sheet).

MIL-P-22296 B

MIL-P-22296 has been superseded by ASTM D1710.

MIL-P-24074

MIL-P-24074 has been canceled. Further information is only available from Naval Sea Systems Command.

Rod and Tube Specifications

The following are the PTFE rod and tube specifications most frequently referenced in drawings and RFQs:

  • AMS 3656 — virgin PTFE extruded rod and tube
  • AMS 3660 — virgin PTFE molded rod and tube
  • AMS 3678 — filled and unfilled PTFE extruded and molded rods and tubes
  • ASTM D1710 — virgin PTFE extruded rod and tube
  • ASTM D3294 — virgin PTFE molded rod and tube (also applies to sheet)
  • ASTM D4745 — filled PTFE extruded and molded rod and tube

Sheet Specifications

  • ASTM D3308 — virgin PTFE film (also applies to skived sheet)
